Ebdon: New UK Champion.

Tonight Dubai based Peter Ebdon became the ninth player to join the elite group of players that have won both, UK Championship and the World Snooker Championship after beating scot Hendry 10-6 at the York Barbican Centre in York.

Peter Ebdon and Steven Hendry were neck and neck at the first session with the scores at 4-4. At the evening session Ebdon managed to win the first 4 frames of the night. Hendry then realised the situation and brought the scores round to 8-6 with a hard hitting break of 116. 2002 World Champion, Ebdon then kept his cool and won the final two frames with breaks of 43 and 70 sealing the victory and the UK Snooker Championship.

In doing so he became only the ninth player - joining Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, John Parrott, Hendry, John Higgins, Mark Williams and Ronnie O'Sullivan - to win snooker's two most prestigious titles.

"There are so many great players to have won both - it means so much to me to join that select group." said a happy Ebdon of mojocues.
"I am just absolutely over the moon. I worked ever so hard for this tournament, and I've had so many tough matches."
"The final just went a bit funny and we both started missing balls, but there's a lot of pressure out there."
"I'm just so proud for everyone back home in Dubai. My wife Deborah and the children were watching at home on the BBC via the internet - this one's for them." Said Peter Ebdon.

Steven Hendry who is after a record 6th UK Championship win, was lucky to be leading 3-1 in the early stages of the game. But, Peter "Ebbo the Great" managed to pull it back to 4-3 with 60, 83 and a table clearing 165.
It should have been 5-3, but Ebdon missed an ambitious attempt at a double to allow Hendry to draw level a the conclusion of the opening session, leaving the scores at 4-4.
Both players seemed a little scrappy on the resumption, with Ebdon winning the 9th frame to bring the score to 5-4.
Steven Hendry, nicknamed "Rolls Royce of Snooker" seemed to lose control of his cueing action, muttering to himself and shaking his head in disbelief at a series of missed chances. I strong minded Ebdon managed to pull 3 frames over Hendry bring the score to 8-4, two frames from victory.
Hendry suggested he might make it a tight finish when he won the 13th frame, after several misses, and then showed his class with a break of 116 - his only century of the match - to narrow the gap to 8-6.
Hendry then missed a good early opening in the next, and a run of 43 took Ebdon to the brink of victory. One more frame and the UK Championship would be his.
The Dubai resident made no mistake in the next, a confident break of 70 sealing his seventh ranking tournament victory.

"It was obvious that Peter was over the moon with the victory. He has had it hard and the best of luck certainatly hasn't been on hsi side." said Snooker24-7's founder, Niall Drew. "It was an emotional moment for all when Ebdon dedicated the win to his family back home in Dubai, just before he broke down into tears of overwellming joy"
